This painting began when I wanted to try painting skin beneath water. I was also inspired by a photograph I saw many years ago of a woman standing naked in a lake with her small son in front her. His head rested just where her thighs met, (the photo was cropped at her waist) and showed that they had the same color hair. I've looked for this photo online and have yet to find it - it was titled "How such-n-such got his red hair".

I'm planning to at some point create more paintings along these lines, which is why this one is named "The Bathers 1".
